Glass Recycling at Last!

START SAVING THOSE BOTTLES AND JARS!

Fairbanksans now have the opportunity to dispose of their glass somewhere other than the borough landfill or on our littered roadsides. Thanks to the generous assistance of Lynden Transport and the University of Alaska, the Northern Alaska Environmental Center is proud to announce that residents can now drop off glass in specially marked collection bins in the Taku parking lot at UAF -- conveniently located across from the Farmer’s Loop West Transfer Station.

Everyone is invited to the kickoff event at the UAF Taku Lot off Farmer's Loop at 1p.m. on Monday February 9th.

The Northern Alaska Environmental Center has been working with the Associated Students of UAF, Lynden Transport, Polar Supply Company, other local businesses, Interior Alaska Green Star, and friends of Karoline Frey, a UAF PhD student who died in a tragic accident in 2002. This is truly a community-wide collaborative effort.

The glass will be back-hauled to Anchorage on Lynden Transport trucks. In Anchorage, the glass will be ground up by Polar Supply Company, for use as road fill and for sandblasting. Polar Supply also uses Anchorage glass, but needs a larger supply.

The program accepts all colors of bottles, and will also accept window glass, although all framing must be removed. Unfortunately, auto glass and safety glass cannot be accepted. Rinsing jars and bottles is recommended, and caps and lids must be removed from containers, but labels can remain on.

Happy recycling -- and don't forget, you can take recyclable aluminum to your local transfer station, and all kinds of paper and cardboard can be taken to the Borough landfill for reuse as fuel pellets at Eielson AFB.
